Joyous start to Western Isles Mòd
Over a thousand people celebrated a joyous start to the Western Isles Mòd over the weekend, with a torchlight procession, concerts and praise services. Lewis Sports Centre was packed to capacity on Saturday night as 200 musicians, singers and dancers displayed a Hebridean showcase of talent, premiering new work by the specially convened Western Isles Traditional Orchestra, while offering a chance for the audience to enjoy old favourites by choirs, pipe bands and musicians of all kinds. Western Isles competitors did well in Saturday’s opening competitions in Stornoway and Linaclete, with some of the prizewinners performing as part of Saturday’s concert.
Sporting contests as part of the Mòd fringe saw Skye crowned winners of the Mòd shinty cup over Lewis, with a final score of 3-0. A Lewis and Harris Select football team took on Glasgow Island AFC, with Glasgow walking away winners 3-1 on penalties, after a 2-2 draw.
