Summer shows season starts soon
The summer gets underway for real on the 7th July with the fine weather and the first summer show all contributing to the holiday atmosphere. Uig Gala Day opens at 12 noon on Reef Machair, offering the usual programme of games, entertainments and show, including Uig’s unique sheep races and boat trips from the beach.
There’ll be a new winner of the Jock Stein cup tonight ¬– regardless of the outcome of the cup final. Point were the cup winners for the past three years, but did not make it through their closely-contested semi-final with Westside early this month, that match ending 2-1 after extra time. Today’s final, which is contested between Westside and Ness, kicks off at 7pm. There’s more cup excitement on Monday evening with Eilean an Fhraoich semi-finals between Ness and Westside, and Lochs and Back. That cup will also change hands as Carloway were the trophy winners in 2016 and 2017, but were knocked out in the first round 4-3 on aggregate, also by Westside.
Lewis Camanachd are at home to Lovat on Saturday, during a run of tough matches. Lovat are up to second place in the Marine Harvest North Division 2, having played the same number of matches as Lewis but with 18 points to their credit – just one point short of the top slot. Still, Lewis held third-placed Caberfeidh to a 3-all draw earlier this month, and the island team have been performing well on the pitch since then. Throw-up at the Shawbost pitch is at 2pm.
